20th Century Studios has hired Josh Cooley to write the theatrical script for 99 Nights in the Forest. The Hollywood Reporter broke the personnel news; GameSpot carried the same hire into games coverage, which is how most Roblox players learned a Pixar Oscar winner now holds a survival-horror screenplay.
Cooley directed Toy Story 4, which won the Oscar, and earned an Academy Award nomination for Inside Out. He later directed Transformers One. Grandma's Favourite Games built the source experience on Roblox, where it still pulled nearly 150,000 players when the assignment became public.
A woods game that already sells itself in one sentence
99 Nights in the Forest is survival horror with almost no lore tax. You last in the woods, or you do not. That is the pitch, and it is most of the nightmare.
Platform hits of this size used to stay on the platform. Roblox spent years as a launcher for other people's rooms, not as a studio with a slate Hollywood could option. Then a handful of experiences started drawing crowds that look, from the outside, like a live-service launch. 20th Century, the Disney-owned label that used to be Fox's film arm, bought this one earlier this year after what was described as a "competitive" dealmaking process.
Competitive is the word that should make players sit up. It means more than one buyer thought a user-generated woods game could hold a theater. It also means 20th paid like it wanted to win, which is not how most Roblox adaptations get staffed.
If Cooley writes toward the scare, other platform breakouts get a path that does not require a family rating. If he writes toward the brand, they get the opposite lesson: the movie is a rewrite of the thing people actually boot. Parents who only know Roblox as an app will assume one movie. Night-shift horror players will assume another. Those two crowds do not want the same third act.
Hollywood has spent the last few years shopping games the way it used to shop young-adult novels. Super Mario Bros. proved a clean adaptation could open like a tentpole. Plenty of messier ones followed. A Roblox option is still weirder than a Nintendo mascot, because the author is a small team inside a platform's rules. Handing that option to the person who made toys cry in a Pixar picture is how you announce you are taking it seriously. It is also how you announce you might sand it down.
Why this writer, and why that is a problem
Cooley's resume is studio animation and branded spectacle. Toy Story 4 had to work as a movie, not as a toy commercial, which is a real skill. Inside Out had to make feelings visible. Transformers One had to drag a toy aisle toward something like character. None of those jobs is keep a Roblox forest frightening for 100 minutes.
The assignment, as reported, is the script. No director is attached in this round. No rating. No date. Someone still has to decide what 99 nights looks like when you cannot pause and wait for daylight. Duration is the game's terror. Film hates duration. It wants a chase.
Players should treat the writer hire as the tone meeting, not as a poster. A director announcement will tell you who lights the woods. The pages will tell you whether anyone dies badly. Until then, the useful comparison is not other Roblox movies, of which there are barely any. It is other game pictures that hired famous writers and then discovered the fandom wanted the loop, not the lore dump.
IP handoffs make people twitch for a reason. A Witcher 3 expansion handed to another studio produces the same fan question this hire will produce: is the new name there to protect the thing, or to make it travel? Warcraft 3's expansion built as a bridge into WoW is a different industry trying to walk an audience from one product to another. 20th is trying to walk Roblox players into a multiplex. Console ownership fights are not the same contract, but Xbox's leftover disc-to-digital plumbing is a reminder that the rights paperwork outlives the trailer.
What you can actually track from here
The next tell is a director. Then a rating whisper. PG-13 woods and R-rated woods are different products that share a title. Grandma's Favourite Games either shows up as a producer-style credit or as a silent option. 20th either treats this as the first of several Roblox pickups or as a one-off that has to work because the bidding was loud.
For anyone who still has the game installed, the concurrent count already proved the fear travels. The movie will not add a new night cycle to the experience you are playing. It can, if the script keeps the vulnerability, make the next Roblox horror easier to option. It can also teach every other small team that the theatrical version is the cute one.
Cooley is a bigger name than this lane usually gets. That is the news. The open question is whether he writes the forest you already know, or a forest Disney can put on a juice box.
